Photoshop Tutorial : Removing The Background From An Image Using The Extract Filter

In the our last photoshop tutorial on how to remove the background from an image using magic wand tool, here is another way using the extract filter (slightly more complicated) to achieve the same result.

Using the extract filter

Step 1: Open up the image you want

Step 2 : In our example, we only want the parrot. Now go under Filter, and choose ‘Extract’. Now it will look like image below.

Step 3 : Now highlight / outline the areas you want to retain.

Step 4 : Image below shows the complete areas you want to retain.

Step 5 : Now choose the Fill tool. This will fill the areas you want to retain.

Step 6 : This is what it looks like after you’ve filled the image.

Step 7 : You will end up with this.

8. Now select the Eraser tool, adjust the brush size, and tidy up the edges.

9. You’re done! Final result below :-
