MySQL, a popular database system for web application (more than 10 million of installations) announces today that it has been acquired by Sun Microsystems for US $1 billion.

MySQL has been one of the essential component for running web applications like Wordpress, Wikipedia and other huge content management systems (i.e Joomla, Drupal). Most people (web developers especially) would like to know where MySQL is heading after the takeover. Will it remains as an open source project?

I found this on MySQL.com :

I’d like to think that the acquisition of MySQL by Sun will be seen as good news also by the core group of users who form the active MySQL community. This is because Sun is a safe haven for MySQL. Sun knows Open Source, and to the extent things change, I expect Sun to add value to our community. I don’t expect huge change, though. We continue to work with our quality contributors, we continue to provide our MySQL Forums, the Planet MySQL blog aggregator, we remain on the #mysql-dev and #mysql channels on Freenode, we provide MySQL University lessons, we meet at the MySQL Users Conference. We’ll put effort into connecting the many FOSS enthusiasts and experts at Sun — whom we will now learn to know better — with our active user community.

So it guess it safe to say that it will remain free and open source.

If you want to host your own blog but do not want fork out too much for it, then this website, FreeWebHosting.com is perfect for you. Reading the domain name itself, you should roughly know that you DO NOT need to pay for the hosting service provided by them. The only catch is there will be an unobtrusive footer link automatically inserted into the footer of each page… probably “Free Web Hosting by FreeWebHosting247.com“.

Here are the specifications for the free hosting plan and I must say that it is a pretty generous plan. It includes my favourite control panel, Cpanel and Fantastico which allows you to “automagically” install popular web applications (i.e. Wordpress, phpBB Forum, OsCommerce) on your website in seconds:-

                     		500MB Web Space

10GB Data Transfer

PHP5/MySQL/CGI/Crons

UNLIMITED MySQL Databases

UNLIMITED Addon Domain Names

UNLIMITED FTP Accounts

UNLIMITED E-Mail Accounts

cPanel/Fantastico

UNLIMITED Parked Domains

UNLIMITED Subdomains

UNLIMITED Email Autoresponders

UNLIMITED Email Forwarders

To enjoy this hosting service for free, I have highlighted some important rules that you will need to follow/fulfil:-

You may not remove, resize so as to render invisible or unreadable, or otherwise block the link that FreeWebHosting247.com inserts onto your web pages

Your website must be in English

Your page should be active – that is, it is either receiving ‘hits’ or is being updated/posted to. Sites that either receive no hits or are not updated over a period of 60 days will be considered ‘inactive’ and may be removed by FreeWebHosting247.com to make room for other users

You may not use your web space to provide material, or links to material, that is grossly offensive to the Web community. This includes: Blatant expressions of bigotry, racism, hatred, or profanity

You may not use unsolicited email to promote your site

You can find the rest of the terms and conditions here.

I have signed up an account with them to host one of my smaller site and at the same time, to check out the performance of their server. You may want to give them a try.
